Neonatology Department
Overview
Neonatology Department at Smita Hospital provides specialist care to infants who are ill or require care for a wide range of issues which include premature birth, congenital defects, and sepsis.Neonatologists at Smita Hospital have extensive training and experience and are backed by qualified medical staff and modern medical facilities including Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) which help them provide comprehensive care for infants. Additionally, the Neonatologists’ team also works to identify diseases and disorders before birth so that the family can be better prepared to care for the child.

Diagnostic Services: In-house neurosonography, portable X-ray, and portable arterial blood gas (ABG) services are available for prompt and accurate diagnosis.
Specialized Pediatric Procedures: We offer specialized procedures such as total parenteral nutrition, peripheral invasive central catheter insertion, umbilical vein and artery catheterization, and exchange transfusion.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Overview
Our 07 bedded NICU is having state of art facility to provide advanced medical & surgical care to new born with complex clinical scenarios. At Smita Memorial Hospital and Research Center we have interactive session with our Neonatologists, Intensivists & Obstetrician in high risk delivery to prepare the arrival of babies.
Our NICU is fully equipped with professionals & trained staff to provide care of extremely premature & low birth weight new born. We are trained to manage new born with extreme prematurity, extreme low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, persistent primary pulmonary hypertension, meconium aspiration syndrome, birth asphyxia, congenital anomalies, Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia & complex neonatal surgical conditions.
At our hospital we allow mother to actively participate in care of her child to promote mother child bonding. We also encourage mother to provide Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) which provide comprehensive developmental care of babies. Our family-centered care approach keeps you up-to-date about your child’s condition and receive the information you need to make informed choices about their care.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
Overview
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Smita Hospital is a dedicated 8-bed unit equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring and diagnostic equipment. Managed 24/7 by a team of internationally trained Paediatric Intensive Care doctors and Nurses who stand for ethical and evidence-based practices.
The pediatric critical care wing at Smita Hospital is one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the region and the first in the district of Idukki. The PICU is equipped with a facility to provide advanced pediatric ventilation, Invasive hemodynamic monitoring&latest diagnostic equipment to ensure the best possible treatment for critically ill infants, children, and adolescents up to 14 years of age which ensures the best possible outcomes
Equipped with advanced technology, our multidisciplinary team includes qualified pediatric intensivists, Neonatologists, Cardiologists, nephrologists, neurologists, Hemato-oncologists, Surgeons, dieticians, physiotherapists, and Paediatric trained nurses. Our family-centered care approach ensures that you are kept up-to-date about your child’s condition and receive the information you need to make informed choices about their care.
Facilities
We have state of an art 8 bedded PICU with the latest equipment & infrastructure with a 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio. Critically sick children are under continuous observation of our trained and qualified nurses who have experience in managing such cases. We treat an array of conditions from medical illnesses like complicated pneumonia, meningoencephalitis, and ARDS to surgical conditions like Polytrauma, traumatic brain injury, and other surgical illnesses including postoperative care.
