Critical Care or Intensive Therapy Departments also called Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are sections within hospital that look after patients whose conditions are life-threatening and need constant, close monitoring and support from equipment and medication to keep normal body functions going. Our experienced multidisciplinary team provides state-of-the-art patient care with promptness and care. The team comprises of trained, efficient and skilled staff in Critical Care Department, having expertise in the evaluation and management of these critically ill patients. The department provides critical care services for 15 beds in Medical ICU,08 beds in Surgical ICU,05 Beds in Neurosurgical ICU,03 beds in CTVS ICU, 08 beds in PICU, 07 Beds in NICU and 08 beds in CCU and also includes isolation facilities. The team comprises of Chief Intensivists, Junior Intensivists, Senior & Junior Doctors and highly efficient, experienced and well trained nursing & paramedical staff.

MEDICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (ICU)

The hospital’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with 15 beds is a highly specialized unit dedicated to the needs of patients requiring intensive monitoring and patient care services involving cardiac, medical and surgical care. The ICU is equipped to provide safe, high-quality, personalized care. A ratio of 2 patients to 1 nurse is maintained in ICU however, a ratio of 1:1 is maintained for patients requiring very intensive support and monitoring is maintained.

 

From sophisticated bedside monitors to the most advanced ventilators and defibrillators, the ICU features state-of-the-art medical equipment, including computerized monitoring system and a computerized medication administration record with barcode scanning to ensure patient safety. Mechanical ventilators to assist breathing through an endotracheal tube or a tracheostomy tube; cardiac monitors including those with telemetry; external pacemakers; defibrillators; dialysis equipment for renal problems; equipment for the constant monitoring of bodily functions; a web of intravenous lines, feeding tubes, nasogastric tubes, suction pumps, drains, and catheters; and a wide array of drugs to treat the primary condition(s) of hospitalization. Medically induced comas, analgesics, and induced sedation are common ICU tools needed and used to reduce pain and prevent secondary infections.

  • Resuscitation equipment, maintenance of crash carts, Defibrillation equipment & Advanced airway devices.
  • Portable digital X-ray with on spot visual display.
  • Flexible intubating Laryngoscope for difficult endotracheal Intubation making procedure safe.
  • Advanced ABG machine with point of care testing for Electrolytes, Glucose and Lactate.
  • The Central pendent which provides better interface between patient and ventilator /Monitor.
  • Separate counseling room for relatives thus improves communication and confidence while maintaining Privacy.
  • Isolated and clean DU (Dirty Utility) area to maintain hygiene.
  • Bright lightning system has been installed creating better atmosphere for doctors and patients.
  • 2 Isolation Beds.
  • Care taken to ensure proper natural light for each patient.

SURGICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Recently renovated 08 beds SICU on first floor is a specialized facility dedicated to providing exceptional care for patients recovering from surgical procedures. Our SICU is designed to meet the unique needs of surgical patients, ensuring a comprehensive and supportive environment for optimal recovery. The team is headed by Chief Intensivist and provides availability of qualified and experienced critical care specialist, dedicated and qualified nurses, efficient nursing aid and attendant staff round the clock having sympathetic approach to patient care. Efficient and readily available paramedic staff i.e. X-ray technicians, Phlebotomist, etc. Efficient team serving various organ transplant patients like Kidney transplant recipient, liver transplant recipient, etc.The design of SICU incorporates various infection control practices minimizing risk of hospital acquired infections.SICU provides backbone to conduct highest of high risk surgeries in city of  Thodupuzha.

 

NEUROSURGICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (NSICU)

CTVS Intensive Care Unit (CTVSICU)

Welcome to the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CTVSICU) at Smita Memorial Hospital & Research Centre, where we provide specialized care for patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries. Our CTVSICU is designed to deliver comprehensive and compassionate care to individuals requiring intensive post-operative management for heart and vascular conditions.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Our 07 bedded NICU is having state of art facility to provide advanced medical & surgical care to new born with complex clinical scenarios. At Smita Memorial Hospital and Research Center we have interactive session with our Neonatologists, Intensivists & Obstetrician in high risk delivery to prepare the arrival of babies. 

Our NICU is fully equipped with professionals & trained staff to provide care of extremely premature & low birth weight new born. We are trained to manage new born with extreme prematurity, extreme low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, persistent primary pulmonary hypertension, meconium aspiration syndrome, birth asphyxia, congenital anomalies, Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia & complex neonatal surgical conditions. 

At our hospital we allow mother to actively participate in care of her child to promote mother child bonding. We also encourage mother to provide Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) which provide comprehensive developmental care of babies. Our family-centered care approach keeps you up-to-date about your child’s condition and receive the information you need to make informed choices about their care.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Smita Hospital is a dedicated 8-bed unit equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring and diagnostic equipment. Managed 24/7 by a team of internationally trained Paediatric Intensive Care doctors and Nurses who stand for ethical and evidence-based practices.

The pediatric critical care wing at Smita Hospital is one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the region and the first in the district of Idukki. The PICU  is equipped  with a facility to provide advanced pediatric ventilation, Invasive hemodynamic monitoring&latest diagnostic equipment to ensure the best possible treatment for critically ill infants, children, and adolescents up to 14 years of age which ensures the best possible outcomes
